Franklin Township
Franklin Township’s history began as early as around 1650 being influenced primarily by Dutch settlers. They traded and bargained with the Raritan Indians for land.
There is no conclusive document says whether Franklin Township was named for the Governer William Franklin, Governor of New Jersey from 1762 to 1776, or Benjamin Franklin. In 2000, the Township Council determined that it would be a good idea to find out who the township was actually named after. The Township Council determined to adhere to the theory that the Township was named for Benjamin Franklin.
Franklin Township was the scene of many raiding parties along Route 27, then known as the Kings Highway
During the Revolutionary War Franklin Township was the scene of many raiding parties along Route 27, then known as the King’s Highway. In fact, General George Washington was sought after by two British generals, Cornwallis and DeHeister, to lure into battle on the farmlands of Middlebush and East Millstone. Washington, however, kept his troops at Chimney Rock, just north of Franklin, until the British withdrew. Several of the prosperous Middlebush farms were destroyed by the British soldiers during their retreat. Washington’s farewell address was delivered to his army in Little Rocky Hill in 1783.
The building of the Delaware-Raritan Canal in 1834, was one of the most important developments for Franklin. Twenty-two miles of this continuous water route from New York to Philadelphia runs through Franklin Township. During the Civil War it was used to move tons of freight by horse drawn barges. Later the building of the railroads led to the eventual abandonment of using the canal for transportation. Today the canal is used for recreation, namely, the Delaware and Raritan State Park.
Franklin Township now consists of a total 46 square miles, bounded on the north, west and south by the Raritan and Millstone Rivers. And on the east, by State Highway 27.

The Hamilton Street Business District consists of local owner operated stores and restaurants as it becomes within closer proximity to New Brunswick. There are many local grocery stores, barbershops, fish markets and even an African Market and Hair Salon. A Farmers Market is made available on every Staurday during the warmer months. Hamilton Street becomes Amwell Road as it travels west toward Hillsborough. Another favorite destination is the Easton Avenue shopping center where favorite stops of mine are the Korean vegetable market and the Chinese Buffet.
